EXecutive function Play Opportunities (EXPO) is a science-based program designed to grow executive function skills in young children with Down syndrome approximately 3 to 6 years old.

What is executive function?

Executive function skills are specific thinking skills that help us solve problems and complete tasks every day.

We all use executive function in our daily lives to complete tasks such as getting dressed, cooking a meal, or playing a game.

Executive function skills include:

  • Remembering goals

  • Waiting to act or respond

  • Thinking flexibly

  • Planning play and activities

WhAT does this mean for my child?

Children use executive function skills in daily routines and to participate in their learning environments, play with friends and family, and play independently.

Many children with Down syndrome have challenges with executive function. You can help your child grow these skills by practicing fun, targeted activities. Teaching during play works well because our brains do their best work when we are calm and relaxed!

How can expo help?

EXPO is designed to help you and your child practice using executive function skills during play and routine activities. EXPO will also help you expand on opportunities to practice these skills with your child outside of EXPO activities. Some EXPO activities may feel like new ways to play, and you may have questions from time to time. EXPO coaches will be there to provide you with support and feedback when you need it.

How will my child and I Participate in EXPO?

You and your child will choose activities each week that can be included in your everyday routines at times that are convenient for your family. No special toys or materials are needed for EXPO activities. For most activities, you will already have what you need available in your home. You will also have a personal EXPO Coach who will help and support you along the way.

  • EXPO targets “executive function skills”, which are a set of thinking and problem-solving skills.

  • Executive function skills help your child to pay attention to tasks, control impulses, manage strong feelings, and play independently.

  • Enhancing these foundations in your child’s early years has the potential to improve their social interactions, school participation, physical abilities, and life skills.
